Mary started to professionally train dogs when she was 14. A Pointer breeder in town wanted his puppies "started" and his younger dogs worked. Mary then went to Angel Memorial Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts to become a veterinary technician. Upon gradation, she moved back to Maine and started working for a multi-vet practice. Mary became one of the first licensed vet techs in Maine.
She has attended behavior, nutrition, orthopedic and obedience seminars annually since the mid '80s has been teaching public obedience classes since 1981.
In 1992 Mary and her husband started Fresh Start, offering private lessons, public obedience classes, behavior evaluations and boarding and training. All training is done using positive, motivational methods.
Mary became involved with AKC tracking in 1985 and is now a Tracking Judge for all levels. She was on the AKC's Tracking Advisory Committee. Mary has taught over 3,000 people how to start their dogs tracking and have fun with the sport. She has started dogs as young as eight weeks of age and as old as 12 years.
